Description Prix

Hidden behind its tall walls, this synagogue is the oldest in Alsace. The building is characterized by its great windows and its facade embellished with pillars. En 1784, the Jewish community counted more than 300 members. This synagogue has been built in 1787 on order of Aaron Meyer, the Superior General of the Jewish Nation. The edifice has stood the test of time and is in mint condition. From the outside, it looks like a Bourgeois mansion and only the great windows and colonnaded facade remind us that this is indeed a place of worship. Inside, there is a vast chamber with a niche reserved for the Torah ark decorating the East side, and the women's gallery (currently used as an oratory) on the West side. A Jewish school was built in the middle of the 19th century but it closed down in 1922.

You can access the synagogue from the "Rue Haute" (High Street).

Closed to the public.
